Former Gestapo headquarters in Kassel: What to do?
Von was located in the former police headquarters at Königstor 1933 – 1938 the Gestapo headquarters for the Kassel administrative district. It is the only remaining location of the Gestapo office in Kassel, whose up to 250 employees over the years 1933- 1945 over a million residents monitored and over 10.000 people who did not conform to the regime were disenfranchised and persecuted, many of whom were murdered.
So far there is nothing in Kassel that reminds us of what happened back then, except for a hard-won one, memorial plaque placed on a side street. Elsewhere, municipalities have historical and political education sites with generous exhibitions in such places- and event areas set up. The newly founded initiative Memorial Police Headquarters Königstor therefore invites representatives from Stuttgart and Hamburg, to report on their dealings with sites of Gestapo terror there, from the Hotel Silber in Stuttgart, from the Stadthaus Hamburg and from the Viktoria Barracks in Hamburg. The experiences here were not only positive. For the townhouse in Hamburg, responsibility was left to a private investor - with disastrous results. Against the background of the planned privatization of the property owned by the state, this is also an important reference for considerations about the future of the Kassel building.
