University of Kassel, Kassel

A day after 8. March, the World Women's Day, the University of Kassel tore down the Nujîn Peace Statue, a project, which is a common culture of remembrance for women* and children, affected by sexual violence in times of war, trying to develop. During the Asia-Pacific War (1931-1945) were about 200.000 Women and girls at least 14 Asia-Pacific countries subjected to massive sexual violence by Japanese military. Unfortunately, the history of sexual violence in armed conflicts repeats itself over and over again. Such a memorial is extremely important at the moment.

The university is now intervening directly in student self-government and in their freedom. With unilateral approvals and pressure with spontaneous dismantling, the university just proves it again, how little she gets from student participation in enlivening and shaping the campus. Instead of a dialogue, a possibility, weaving feminist struggles and views into a campus academically through an artwork, the university only wanted to slow down and prevent the process of integration. The re-traumatization of those affected was accepted with approval, who have had colonial-racist experiences.

We do not know, where Nujin is. where she is being held captive. But what we know, that we can only fight it together. Just fill in the blank together and show it, how important the statue is to the campus!

So come on Wednesday, the 15.03.23 one 16 Clock on to the university square 10 in Kassel. Let's build the student house together, fill the campus garden and the emptiness of Nujîn Square and remember all that, what she stands for!
